FAQs

When do I need to order my plants?

For autumn plantings, orders need to be placed in the proceeding winter or early spring. For spring plantings, orders need to be placed in by late spring, early summer to allow for slower growth rates over the colder months.

Do you have stock on hand?

While we’re mostly focussed on growing to order, we do keep some stock on hand or get in touch to find out what we have in the nursery that’s ready to go right now.

When is the best time to plant?

Autumn plantings are the most reliable in cold climates, as this allows new plantings to establish over winter before hot weather hits. Increased wind and early heat waves mean the spring planting window is less forgiving. However, spring plantings can be successful where careful attention is paid to plants’ access to water. Mulch is highly beneficial where practical.

How do I prepare my planting site?

Ripping may be necessary to deal with compacted soils and improve soil moisture. New plantings need to be free of weed competition for a minimum of 2 years. Thought should be given to protecting plantings from browsing animals such as rabbits, hare, deer, stock, kangaroos and wallabies. Don’t make the mistake of thinking natives are not appetising — you’d be surprised by what will get nibbled! On a small scale, mulch can provide your transplants with a good start.

Please get in touch if you require further advice about preparing your planting site and we’ll organise a consultation with Michael or Annie Platts.

Do you grow exotic (non-native) plants too?

We don’t typically grow exotic plants, however, if you’re having a hard time finding something in particular, please get in touch. Annie has a wealth of knowledge around nursery stock, and may be able to find what you’re looking for.
