Monaro Native Tree Nursery

Specialists in alpine and cold-climate natives

What we do

Monaro Native Tree Nursery (MNTN) is a wholesale, production nursery specialising in growing native seedlings to order for carbon sequestration projects, landscaping, and revegetation. We also wholesale cold climate plants to nurseries and have special expertise in growing alpine plants. Located at an elevation of 950 m, we pride ourselves on producing resilient, cold-hardy transplants.

Nursery background

Originally established in Bombala in 1991 by Michael and Annie Platts, Monaro Native Tree Nursery is now located at Anembo, just over an hour south-east of Canberra, in the foothills of the Snowy Mountains.

After more than 30 years running the nursery in Bombala, Michael and Annie Platts handed the reins of the day-to-day running of the nursery to Emily Yarra and Michael Kobier in 2024, but they continue to offer their expertise and decades of experience through site assessment, consultation, and seed collection services.

Michael and Annie Platts

In addition to working on projects across NSW and Victoria, Michael and Annie have also successfully established over 70 hectares of shelter belts on their own 450 hectare sheep and cattle grazing enterprise, giving them first-hand experience and understanding of the value of farm revegetation and whole farm planning.

Emily Yarra and Michael Kobier

After working alongside Michael and Annie Platts for a year, Emily Yarra and Michael Kobier took over ownership and management of Monaro Native Tree Nursery’s production nursery in 2024.

Prior to owning Monaro Native Tree Nursery, the wife-husband duo owned and operated Brightside Produce, a vegetable farm located in the Monaro, for over a decade. This has given them a wealth of experience in horticulture and organic small-scale farming as well as a thorough understanding of the particular challenges of the Monaro climate and the benefits of increasing biodiversity on farms.
